Question: Libby, can you give me some tips on cutting household expenses? Answered by Libby Guthrie

Hi, I’m Libby Guthrie, Keller Williams Realty in Northern California. I’m going to give you some tips today on cutting your household expenses. I know Ken and I have really looked at our expenses lately and have been able to cut out some expenses that have helped us each month with our bottom line.

So one thing you can look at is your credit card balance statement and look at that and see what is coming out of that each month automatically for things that you may or may not need anymore. Really look at that. Also, look at your streaming services or your cable service. Do you really use that, that much or can you cut back on that too?

Another thing to look at is possibly cutting back on people that are doing things around your home. Instead of having a gardener come once a week, maybe you could have the gardener come every other week if you have a gardening service. Same thing with a cleaning service. If your cleaning service comes once or twice or three times a month. Maybe cutting back on that too. That would be helpful.

Another thing to look at is your homeowner’s exemption on your property taxes. I had a client last year that refinanced, and for some reason, the County did not pick it up that they had an exemption because they lived in that principal residence, so they were able to go back to the County and correct that, and they got that homeowner’s exemption.

Also, look at contacting your people that you owe money to each month, such as a credit card, and see if you can lower that rate so that, that would help you with your monthly payments.

So I hope these hints have been helpful for you and I hope you can save some money.

If you have any questions regarding buying or selling a home, even if you don’t live in the Northern California area, I would be happy to help you out as I do know people all over the country that help people buy and sell homes, and I can certainly refer you to a good agent.

My number is (925) 628-2436. Thanks a lot.

Here's the truth: buyers are out in full force during spring, but they're also comparing more homes. The difference between a good offer and a great one often comes down to how your home presents.
Three simple steps can make a big impact:
1. Declutter ruthlessly – Remove personal items, excess furniture, and anything that makes spaces feel smaller. Buyers need to envision their life in your home, not yours.2. Deep clean everything – Don't just tidy up. Clean baseboards, windows, grout, and carpets. A sparkling home signals that it's been well-maintained.3. Add light staging touches – Fresh flowers, neutral throw pillows, and good lighting can transform a room without a big investment.
These aren't just cosmetic changes. They help buyers emotionally connect with your space, which directly impacts offer strength.
Spring sellers who take these steps seriously tend to see faster sales and higher offers. It's not about perfection—it's about presentation.
