Is Technology Alienating You From Your Community?

It’s not an age-old tale, but rather a new-age trend. Is technology interfering with societies ability to connect, in real life, with other people and the community as a whole? Well, according to the California Association of Realtors and Pew Research, the majority of those who were interviewed said yes.

Here is the question they were asked:

Does high-tech know-how leave you feeling disconnected with your community?

Based on what these consumers had to say, there does seem to be a correlation between those who are immersed in technology and a desire for a closer connection with their community.

Of those polled –

• 78% felt they should be doing more to help in their community
• 67% didn’t feel as close to the people in their local community as they would like
• 62% wish there was more their community could do to help them

And overall, “Internet users rank local community activities last in a list of activities they feel most informed about because digital technologies are more dominant.”

So what can you do about this?

Find local events that interest you and your family, turn off your computer and games and attend some of these events. Make it a rule that cell phones and tablets are off while you’re at the activity.

Volunteer once a week, or once every two weeks for a charity you care about.

Join a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the Lions Club, Rotary, or volunteer at a local school or church.

Simply being aware of the issue can help you get past it. Enjoy your technology but remain vigilant to not let it control your life and leave you like an island separated from society.
